Professional Development School Experiences
Students will be placed in middle, junior high, or senior high schools for field experiences beginning their sophomore year and will spend significant time in public schools until their semester of student teaching.
Students are assigned for eight weeks to a middle school and eight weeks to a high school (for a total of 16 weeks) where they apply professional knowledge and refine their instructional skills. Students work closely with master classroom teachers and university professors while student teaching.
Scholarships are available through the College of Human Ecology, the College of Education, and the university. To apply, submit a K-State scholarship application to the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
Work experience in a business setting is required for all family and consumer sciences education students. Students learn skills applicable to the teaching of occupational preparation classes.
An essential element in a college experience is leadership development. Students in family and consumer sciences education are involved in leadership roles throughout the university, in the College of Human Ecology, and in the College of Education.
Family and consumer sciences education students are encouraged to participate in the Family and Consumer Sciences Interest Group, the Student National Education Association, and the Preprofessional/Graduate Student section of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
Qualified students are encouraged to participate in Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Upsilon Omicron, and Kappa Omicron Nu honor societies as well as the College of Human Ecology honors program.
Facilities and Equipment
Current technology is applied to classroom activities and projects. Computer technology is incorporated into human ecology and teacher education classes. Computer laboratories are available for student use throughout the university.
