Happy New Year! As we begin 2015, we will continue to encourage human ecology students to join the Professional Mentoring Program and to recruit professionals willing to mentor K-State students. Please consider your colleagues and refer them to our program if they are interested. They do not have to be a K-State grad. They can submit the application and find out more information about the program in the mentoring handbook for mentors (pdf).
As your mentees return to campus for the spring semester, they will be thinking about summer plans and arranging internships. Talk to your mentee about the importance of internship experience in your field. In an article written by Katharine Hansen on quintcareers.com, Hansen lists numerous reasons why college students must have internship experience. During your monthly conversation with your mentee, find out their plans and ask how you can help. There will be a number of career fairs this spring on campus to assist students in connecting with companies. More information can be found on the Career and Employment Services website.
We are currently producing online training modules to assist mentors in working with their mentees. I look forward to making these available to you this spring!
Lastly, please mark your calendars and save the date for our first on-campus event for the Professional Mentoring Program. On Friday, February 20, from 6-7:30 p.m., we will have a reception for mentors and mentees to meet in person in a relaxed setting. The reception will be held in connection with the College of Human Ecology's Professional Development Day that will take place on Saturday, February 21, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. I will be sending more details regarding both events soon.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your mentee or your experience with the program.
