Graduate Research and Creative Inquiry

Graduate students have access to research and scholarly activities encompassing a wide range of academic interests that confront crucial global challenges with industry-leading researchers and attend valuable workshops and forums. Graduate research has many benefits, including the possibility of funding your education.

Doctoral Dissertation Research Awards
Doctoral candidates in the College of Human Ecology (PhD in Human Ecology with specializations in various units of the College, PhD in Personal Financial Planning, PhD in Human Nutrition) who have had their dissertation proposal approved by their major adviser. are eligible to apply for a Dissertation Research Award. 

Recipients may receive up to $1000 to conduct or enhance their dissertation research projects. Applications are accepted each semester and will be assessed using this rubric.

Justin 326 Graduate Suite, Office Etiquette Expectations

The College of Human Ecology provides a room, Justin 326 Graduate Suite, designated specifically for HE Graduate Students. Access and use of Justin 326 requires a signed Room Use Contract. No access code or room use permission for Justin 326 will be given to any HE Graduate Student without prior submittal of this document. A signed contract must hold a student’s original signature, date and printed name where indicated. Electronic copies will not be accepted.

Instructions for usage of Justin 326:

  1. Print the Room Use Contract.
  2. Read the document carefully and completely.
  3. Sign the contract committing to proper use and care of the room.
  4. Your signed room use contract must be submitted to Denise Ramos, Administrative Specialist, Justin 119 (Ext. 2-5506) in the Dean’s Office at which time you will be given an access code good for the current semester only.

Security: Justin 326 Graduate Suite should only be used by GTAs and GRAs from the College of Human Ecology. GTAs and GRAs may receive a code for the keypad after completing the Room Use Contract. Do not distribute this code to anyone. If you are the last person in the office please be sure that all doors are closed prior to leaving.

Work space: GTAs and GRAs are invited to utilize work space in Justin 326 Graduate Suite in a first come­first serve fashion each day. This includes tables, desks, and computer work stations. Do not leave personal items at a work space unattended. Please be sure to clean up after yourself.

Storage: All personal items should be stored in your locker(s). There is to be no storage on top of the lockers. To obtain access to a locker contact Rita Newell in the Dean’s office. There is to be no storage in any public space (above the lockers, on tables, etc.) If you need additional storage please contact your individual department.

Meetings: We understand that GTAs and GRAs will occasionally need to meet with individuals in Justin 326. Please keep meetings to 4 people or less. Larger meetings should utilize more public meeting space (i.e. Hoffman Lounge). It is also encouraged to use the kitchen area for meetings.

Noise: Please be respectful of your office mates. Speak in an inside voice while having conversations. Turn the volume on your headphones down. Please do not use the office for phone calls or video chat conversations.

Technology: All of the technology in the office is shared. Be sure to log off from your computer when you are finished. Do not eat or drink around technology. If there are issues with the technology please contact the IT department. Computer workstations cannot be reserved­ do not leave items at computer stations unattended.

Cleanliness: Please be respectful of your office mates by cleaning up after yourself. Please throw all trash into one of the trash cans provided. Please put recyclable items into the recycling bin. If needed, wipe down your work area when you leave. Please remember that this is not your living room. Avoid propping your feet up on furniture items. Please keep shoes on at all times.

Kitchen: Wipe down the microwave after use. Throw all trash away. If you are throwing away leftover food please throw it away in a trashcan outside of the office. If you are leaving food items in the refrigerator please label them with the current date. Undated items will be thrown away. Items left for over a week will be thrown away.

Justin 326 Graduate Suite Computer Policy

Computers are set up with a program called Deepfreeze that when the machine is restarted, it returns to a clean state. If you need to save files, they should be stored on network drives. (Please see your department head or major professor regarding permission to access network drives.) Think of these computers as terminals rather than personal computers.

If you are in need of free software installed, you may request it for all machines through the Dean's office (119 Justin Hall). Specialty software is labeled on each machine on which it is installed.

The computers should be used as computer terminals, not as second monitors nor personal work stations. Additional monitors are provided for that purpose. Please use them.

The College and Departments have invested in the software in these computers for your scholarship.

  • Please, no food or drink at these computers. Any food/drink or trash found near computers will be removed.
  • Save data on personal drives. Do not save your data on the computer.
  • Data will be removed.Limit your time at these terminals to allow your colleagues to work on them as well.
  • Keep your personal items in your locker or separate space to ensure space for others at adjacent terminals.

Getting Paid

Your program's office administrator can guide you and/or help you get set up in the payroll system, get you the keys that you need, secure travel and travel reimbursements, set up events, schedule computer carts for classroom use, and assist you in finding supplies that you might need. Contact your graduate program office administrator.
