Is gaining work experience while going to school helping or hindering hospitality students?
Hospitality recruiters and industry professionals have encouraged hospitality students to gain work experience prior to graduation. Hospitality educators are committed to working with students to help them gain the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in the hospitality profession. Can these two goals be achieved simultaneously? This pilot study explored how hospitality management students at one university spent their time during the school week. Relationships among students’ time spent in class, studying, working, and participating in social activities were examined. Results suggested that most students worked during the school week and as amount of time spent working increased, time spent studying and in class tended to decrease.
