Phase Change and Protective Possibilities

When microcapsules of phase change materials (PCMs) are added to textiles, they absorb heat energy as they change from a solid to a liquid state and release heat as they return to a solid state. The paper explains what PCMs are, how they are incorporated into fabrics, and how they work. Many challenges in using PCMs in clothing applications are discussed. Certain factors keep some of the heating and cooling from reaching the body and affecting thermal comfort.
