An aging simulation, a keynote from the secretary of the Kansas Department on Aging and a peek at the future of retirement communities will be part of an open house Friday, Oct. 28, sponsored by Kansas State University’s Center on Aging.

The open house will celebrate the partnership between the center and Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Meadowlark’s community room, 2121 Meadowlark Road, Manhattan. The event is open to the public.

“The partnership has provided staff members and students with access to innovative experiential learning opportunities. Our students learn from older mentors living at Meadowlark and from the things that this long-term organization does well” said Gayle Doll, director of the center. “Meadowlark gains from student-completed service projects, student volunteers, a lecture series for residents and Center on Aging continuing education offerings.”

The afternoon includes:

* 1:30 p.m., The center staff will help participants “Fast Forward” through an aging simulation, giving each the opportunity to experience some common physical health changes often attributed to aging.

* 1:55 p.m., Virginia Moxley, dean of the College of Human Ecology, will open the program.

* 2 p.m., Shawn Sullivan, who studied gerontology at K-State and is secretary of the Kansas Department on Aging, will provide the keynote address with “Transforming the State of Aging Services,” a look at the future of aging services in Kansas.

* 2:30 p.m., In Partnerships with Industry: A Key to the Future, Doll and Willie Novotny, CEO of Meadowlark Hills, will discuss how the partnership has created opportunities for students, faculty, elders and their caregivers.

* 2:45 to 3:30 p.m., The afternoon closes with a tour of Meadowlark Hills and the classroom used for K-State classes. A display of posters students made to illustrate community service projects they have done as part of their gerontology education with Meadowlark and other groups will be available.

Special guests will be gerontology students, alumni of the K-State program, faculty and staff members at the retirement community.

For more information on the event, contact the Center on Aging at gerontology@k-state.edu or 785-532-5945.

Wonder no more. The Friends of the Historic Costume and Textile Museum is sponsoring Textile Education Day from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Kansas State University’s Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art.

Experts associated with K-State’s department of apparel, textiles and interior design will evaluate your textiles and garments, including needlework and laces; accessories and hats; costume jewelry; quilts and coverlets; vintage men’s and women’s apparel; and military uniforms.

As many as three items will be evaluated for a fee of $10, with all proceeds going to support the K-State Historic Costume and Textile Museum in the College of Human Ecology.

The event also will include demonstrations of Chinese paper cutting, a calligrapher who will write your name in Chinese on a keepsake bookmark, and iced tea and cookies will be served.

Textile Education Day is coordinated by the Friends of the Historic Costume and Textile Museum, the department of apparel, textiles and interior design and K-State’s Chinese Student Support Council.

The day is in conjunction with the current Beach Museum of Art exhibition “Dragons and Dragonflies,” featuring Chinese artifacts from the Historic Costume and Textile Museum. Sets of eight note cards with detailed photographs of many of the items in the exhibit are on sale at the museum’s information desk for $12. Proceeds go to the Friends of the Historic Costume and Textile Museum. The exhibition runs through May 30.

New opportunities for research, graduate education and more are coming to the Kansas City area with the opening of Kansas State University’s newest campus in Olathe. A ribbon-cutting ceremony at K-State Olathe will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, with an open house for the public to follow until 7 p.m.

“By making Olathe a part of our three-campus system, Kansas State University expertise in teaching, research and graduate education is coming to the Kansas City metropolitan area,” said K-State President Kirk Schulz. “More opportunities for research, business and higher education are now within reach of the Johnson County community and the entire metro. The Greater Kansas City community will be an important part of our effort to become a top 50 public research university by 2025.”

The campus, located just east of Kansas Highway 7 on College Boulevard in Olathe, will be home to students working toward master’s and doctorate degrees in the biosciences and biotechnology, including animal health and food safety and related areas. They’ll have the opportunity to work with scientists involved in research at the campus.

The open house will be at the campus’s first building, the International Animal Health and Food Safety Institute. The $28 million, 108,000-square-foot building will house research, education and outreach programs in its laboratories and classrooms. The building is financed by a portion of a one-eighth cent sales tax approved by Johnson County voters in November 2008.

“The people of Johnson County have made this building a reality. We’re very appreciative of their support,” said April Mason, K-State provost and senior vice president. “We at Kansas State University look forward to the continued partnerships with local industry, the Olathe school district and community members. Kansas State University Olathe will begin offering graduate classes this fall tailored to the needs of the community.”

K-State Olathe is part of the Johnson County Education and Research Triangle, or JCERT, initiative. It’s a cooperative effort with the University of Kansas, involving KU’s Edwards Campus and the KU Medical Center.

In addition to graduate-level classes and research, K-State Olathe plans to work with area companies to provide professional development training for their employees.

“The grand opening of this building marks a momentous occasion for K-State, Johnson County and the citizens of Kansas, but it’s just the beginning,” said Dan Richardson, chief executive officer of K-State Olathe. “It’s the actual product coming out of the building — education, commercially viable technology and work force development — that will truly make a difference in the regional economy and the quality of life for citizens.”

More information about the new campus is available on the K-State Olathe website. Information about Kansas State University, including its academic programs and research, is available on the K-State website.

Ellyn Elson has been called a hospitality industry dynamo. Add monikers such as creator of a multimillion-dollar food and nutrition software systems company, registered dietitian, passionate promoter of sustainability and author.

Elson will be on the K-State campus Wednesday, April 6, to present the 37th Grace M. Shugart lecture.

The lecture, A Road Less Traveled, will be at 1:30 p.m. in Forum Hall in the K-State Student Union. It is sponsored by the Department of Hospitality Management and Dietetics in the College of Human Ecology and is open to the public.

“I’ll speak to the opportunities that were available to me as a Registered Dietitian,” she said. “I always took a different path but in the end discovered many ways in which my profession helped me to become very successful. I will also discuss the power of networking with professional colleagues and involvement in professional associations.”

Elson is founder and former owner of Computrition, named one of the nation’s Top 500 Woman-Owned Businesses by DiversityBusiness.com. The business specializes in foodservice and nutrition management software for the hospitality and healthcare industries worldwide.

One of her current endeavors is FocusGreen, LLC, a business “committed to assisting others so that they may live and work in sustainable environments that provide the highest degree of efficiency and personal satisfaction,” she said. She also has Destination for Life,LLC, and Simply Chic Productions, LLC.

An expert in the area of innovative systems and creative management approaches to the dietetics profession, she speaks widely on the use of marketing and motivating teams to ensure maximum efficiency while having fun in the workplace.

Elson was the first woman to be honored with the International Food Service Executives Association’s Industry Award of Excellence for significant contributions as an industry leader.

She served as the President of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) Foundation and on the ADA Board of Directors from 1992 – 1993, after holding a series of executive positions at the Foundation.

In 2006 she, along with her co-author Ken Wasco, published Live Like You Mean It, a best-selling motivational roadmap to a happier life.

She lives in California.

“The fact that we have hosted this lecture series for 37 years is a tribute to the lasting legacy of Grace Shugart. As our department head for over 20 years, Mrs. Shugart set the tone for excellence and professionalism that we strive to maintain to this day,” said Deborah D. Canter, professor in HMD.

“Ellyn Elson joins a long line of distinguished industry leaders as she comes to speak to our students, faculty and friends. Ellyn is the classic ‘mover and shaker’ and an entrepreneur of the first order. We’re delighted to have her on campus to inspire all of us to new heights.”

The Grace M. Shugart Lecture Series brings dietitians and food service and hospitality experts to K-State for the enrichment of student curricula and to provide continuing education for practitioners in the field.

Established in 1975, the lecture series honors the late Shugart, former department head and co-author of “Food for Fifty” and “Food Service in Institutions.” Shugart helped build the profession of dietetics and institutional management throughout the United States, serving as president of the American Dietetic Association. She also was a Medallion Award winner and received the Marjorie Hulsizer Copher Award, the American Dietetic Association’s highest honor.

Susan S. Szenasy, editor-in-chief of Metropolis Magazine, will present the 7th annual K-State Interior Design Student Symposium keynote on April 29 in the Student Union.

Since 1986, Szenasy has led the New York City-based magazine of architecture, culture and design. It examines contemporary life through design – architecture, interior design, product design, graphic design, crafts, planning and preservation. The 30-year-old magazine explores economic, environmental, social, cultural, political and technological context.

The symposium, entitled Collision of Thought: Innovation Takes Collaboration, consists of a panel discussion at 10 a.m., a networking luncheon at noon, Szenasy’s keynote at 1:30 p.m. and a post-keynote reception immediately following.

The panel discussion, keynote event and reception of free and open to the public. A registration fee of $5 is required to attend the networking luncheon. You can register on the K-State Wildcat Connection website. Registration deadline is April 15.

“The ID Student Symposium is an event organized by students for students. Our goal is to bring together students, educators, and design professionals for dialogue about important issues to the industry,” said Migette Kaup, associate professor in interior design.

Student co-chairs are Lydia Travis, Jen Burke, Yolonda Guyton, Jess Conrardy, Liz Tung and Haley Splan.

Szenasy teaches design history and design ethics at New York’s Parsons School of Design. She is the author of several books on design, including “The Home and Light.”

An internationally-recognized authority on sustainability and design, she advocates ethical decisions that will contribute less to the earth’s health problems and social injustice. “I am exceedingly hopeful about the future of design and designers’ growing power in society,” she told attendees at an American Institute of Graphic Arts conference.
