Hospitality Management students win best paper at annual conference

Twelve doctoral students and three faculty members from the Department of Hospitality Management attended the 23rd Annual Graduate Education and Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism from January 3rd through 5th, 2018 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The conference hosted 274 presentations (122 stand-up presentations and 152 poster presentations) from universities in the United States, Canada, and beyond that offer graduate programs in hospitality management and tourism.

Of 122 stand-up presentations, 12 were nominated to be considered for four (4) best papers provided by the journals listed below.

  • Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research (APJTR)
  • International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management (IJCHM)
  • Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Technology (JHTT)
  • Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing (JTTM)

Two of six Kansas State University research teams were nominated and received best papers:

Park, E., Chae, B., & Kwon, J. (2018, January) Applying machine learning and traditional statistics to explore the topical structure of the hospitality and tourism literature. Paper to be presented at the 23rd Graduate Education & Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality & Tourism, Fort Worth, Texas. – received the Best Paper Award by Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Technology (JHTT)

Oh, H., & Jang, J. (2018, January). Service improvisation as a double-edged sword. Paper to be presented at the 23rd Graduate Education & Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality & Tourism, Fort Worth, Texas. – received the Best Paper Award by Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing (JTTM)

Along with the best paper awards, Junhee Kwon, associate professor of hospitality management, was recognized as one of 10 paper review track chairs who served for the conference.
