The summer edition of Perspectives, Kansas State University’s research-orientated magazine, features four professors in the College of Human Ecology: Sherry Haar, Briana Nelson Goff, Barbara Anderson and Hyung-Chan Kim.

“How does your garden grow?” details Haar’s research into the sustainability aspects of natural plant dyes that could be used around the world in textile design. The spread includes images of her plants, colors and designs from fabric she created using her dyes.

“It should be a natural alternative. The aim is not to return to using natural dyes, but to consider best practices for each region around the world,” said Haar, professor in the department of apparel, textiles and interior design.

Nelson Goff works with traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder that affects individuals, couples and families, especially those in the military. Her research indicates that communication – talking about the trauma – is necessary for healthy relationships.

The story also profiles Kali Orrick, a senior in family studies and human services, who works with Nelson Goff’s research team.

Nelson Goff is a professor in family studies and human services.

Interior Design students partner each fall with students from Sangmyung University in Seoul, South Korea, to create kiosks – the Korean students for a Kansas City mall and the K-State students for a mall in Seoul. The class helps prepare students for a global, professional practice as they learn to account for cultural differences, said Barbara Anderson, department head.

Assistant Professor Kim teaches the senior-level interior design studio. Students research each other’s countries and meet through video conferences despite a 14-hour time difference.
