Stone House to replace tornado-torn forest

When a tornado dipped into Manhattan on June 11, it dealt more than $20 million worth of damage to the K-State campus.

Among the losses were most of the large trees framing Stone House, the Hoeflin early education education center. “We have no shade on the interior of the play ground,” reported Mary DeLuccie who heads the facility on North Manhattan Avenue.

The shade will return, thanks to a gift from Mary and Carl Ice, Colleyville, Tex. Funds will buy and plant 4- to 5-inch caliber trees and one 6-inch caliber tree.

More than a dozen trees were lost or significantly damaged, DeLuccie said.

The center also lost three playhouses.
