Steve Shields honored as advocate for quality nursing homes

Steve Shields

Steve Shields, president and chief executive officer of Manhattan Retirement Foundation which owns Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan, has received the Public Advocacy award from the College of Human Ecology.

The presentation will be made Friday at the annual Celebration of Excellence.

Shields consults nationally on the “household model” of long-term care and culture change in the nursing home industry. He led the creation of the resident-led services model through self-led staff teams in household community employed at Meadowlark Hills.

Shields serves on the advisory board and faculty of K-State’s Center on Aging.

Shields was awarded the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce’s Volunteer of the Year award in 2004. He earned a bachelor’s in social work from K-State in 1994.
