K-State students attend summit on Western-Muslim world relations

MANHATTAN — Four Kansas State University students recently attended the Young Global Leaders Summit: The Future of Western-Muslim World Relations.

The summit was April 7 at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., and was sponsored by Americans for Informed Democracy, a nonpartisan, nonprofit educational organization.

The summit brought together young global leaders from across the U.S. for a day of workshops, speakers and discussions on how young people can take positive action to improve Western-Muslim world relations. Students heard from experts and then had the chance to weigh in with their own views on the future of this global relationship. Students also learned strategies for talking about global issues and techniques for organizing town hall meetings in their communities as part of a national series on Western-Muslim world relations called “Hope not Hate.”

“K-State is committed to diversity,” said Stephen W. Kiefer, director of the University Honors Program, which sponsored the students’ trip. “It is important for students to explore and embrace other cultures. This program, which encourages students to also reach out to others and encourage them to learn about another culture, is something we thought was important for K-State to be a part of.”
