K-State to celebrate students and cultures with international week

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University will celebrate the cultures of its international students during International Week, April 9-15. A variety of events will be offered throughout the week. Events are sponsored by the International Coordinating Council and are free to the public unless
otherwise noted.

* Monday, April 9: International Cultural Exhibition, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., K-State Student Union courtyard; and International Fashion Show, 7-9 p.m., Forum Hall, Union. The show is co-sponsored by the Union Program Council and by World Friendship.

* Tuesday, April 10: World Ceremonies at a Glance, 6-8:30 p.m., Main Ballroom, Union. The event will feature international students performing ceremonies common in their countries. Refreshments will be served.

* Wednesday, April 11: Vernon Larson International Luncheon Lecture, “Global Environmental Change: An African Perspective,” by David Hartnett, university distinguished professor of biology at K-State and former director of the Konza Prairie Biological Station. The luncheon and lecture will be at the Holiday Inn Ballroom, 17th Street and Anderson Avenue. A buffet lunch will be served beginning at 11:45 a.m. and costs $10.

Luncheon reservations should be made with the office of international programs at 785-532-5990. The lecture, 12:20-1 p.m., is free.

International Dance Lessons will be offered 7-9 p.m. in the K-S-U Rooms at the Union. International dance groups will teach dances to attendees.

* Friday, April 13: Coffee Hour, 4-5 p.m., International Student Center. International students will present “Ethiopia: The Oldest Independent Country in Africa.” Refreshments will follow. The event is co-sponsored by the International Student Center.

* Saturday, April 14: The International Parade, 1 p.m., from the Bosco
Plaza outside the Union to the International Student Center. The parade
coincides with K-State’s annual All-University Open House.

* Sunday, April 15: International Festival of Talents, 7-9 p.m., McCain Auditorium. Admission is free but a ticket is required. Tickets can be picked up at the McCain box office, which will open at 5:30 p.m.
