The Department of Hotel, Restaurant, Institution Management and Dietetics (HRIMD) is pleased to announce the 33rd Grace M. Shugart Lecture, "The Emotional and Economic Burden of Foodborne Illness," delivered by Barbara Kowalcyk. Kowalcyk is the former board president and spokesperson for Safe Tables Our Priority (S.T.O.P.), a non-profit, grassroots organization dedicated to food safety. She has now co-founded the non-profit Center for the Foodborne Illness Research and Prevention. The lecture is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., April 19, 2007, in Forum Hall at the K-State Union.
Kowalcyk, of Loveland, Ohio, became involved in food safety issues following the loss of her 2½-year-old son, Kevin, to E. coli in 2001. Kowalcyk´s work as the S.T.O.P. spokesperson has included giving testimony before the United States Department of Agriculture, the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection, and the National Academy of Sciences. The congressional bill KEVIN´s Law is named in honor of Kowalcyk´s son.
