Empowering Youth with Nutrition and Physical Activity (supplementary curriculum)

Empowering Youth is a manual for use in after school programs and classrooms with youth 11-18 years old. It contains current nutrition and physical activity information to enhance leader knowledge; fun, hands-on activities that teach nutrition concepts; ideas to include nutrition education and physical activity into youth programs and events; resources to help youth develop a nutrition or physical activity related community project; tips, worksheets, handouts, discussion prompters and more!

Available: To middle and high schools upon request from Team Nutrition. Also available in PDF.


Interdisciplinary Nutrition Education Curriculum

- 21 nutrition lesson plans with lesson topics from MyPyramid and label reading to impact of media on food habits. This interdisciplinary nutrition education curriculum includes lesson plans for grades K-12 and is organized into four grade groups (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12). The lesson plans include activities that encourage physical activity and contain website links to additional resources. The lessons are also applicable to adult audiences.
Behavior objectives: Participants will choose and prepare nutritious meals and snacks; will balance the foods they eat with physical activity and will use safe food handling skills.
Target audience: Grades K-12

Jump into Foods and Fitness (J.I.F.F.)

-  Curriculum for grades 3-5 (ages 8-11 years). It may be adapted for younger or older children. This is a fun nutrition, physical fitness and food safety learning activity using MyPyramid for Kids.


Kids a Cookin' and Kids a Cookin' & Movin' (DVD Curriculum)

-  Children learn basic cooking skills, good nutrition, healthy food choices and food safety through short videos.

 Kid Chef and the Clean Kitchen Crew

- This is a comprehensive food safety education program presented in an interactive, multimedia, CD format. Kid Chef was developed for 9 to 12 year olds but may be challenging enough for use with teens and young adults. The program is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 is an explanation of the importance of food safety, how food is contaminated, and conditions necessary for bacterial growth. Chapter 2 covers handwashing. Chapter 3 discusses common foodborne pathogens, and Chapter 4 covers practical everyday measures for proper food handling. Interactive components with immediate feedback are provided throughout the program.

 Kids in the Kitchen

-  Kids in the Kitchen encourages children to eat healthy meals and snacks. It provides creative, hands-on learning experiences that teach youth how to prepare simple, healthy foods. It integrates food safety, physical activity and teamwork with each lesson.

Media-Smart Eat, Think and Be Active! (supplementary curriculum)

An interactive after-school education program for young people ages 11 to 13. It is designed to help teach them about the complex media world around them, and how it can affect their health--especially in the areas of nutrition and physical activity.

Up for the Challenge Lifetime Fitness, Healthy Decisions (supplementary curriculum)
4-H/Army Youth Development Project

Up for the Challenge is a fitness, nutrition and health curriculum for school-aged, middle school and teen youth. It was written for military afterschool programs but is easily adaptable to any afterschool or 4-H club setting. The 290-page curriculum is divided into five chapters with each chapter containing multiple lessons in physical activity, nutrition and healthy decision making. Lessons range in scope and length from 30-60 minute nutrition and/or physical activities to a multi-week wellness event.


Walk Kansas for Kids

Walk Kansas for Kids is an 8-week program for 1st - 6th graders that promotes healthy food choices mixed in with a little fun and physical activity.  Kids will learn all about the importance of having variety in the diet, the difference between portions and serving sizes, vitamins and minerals, the benefits of water, and so much more.  This program can be used in after school programs as well as traditional classroom settings.

Summer 2012

Updates to the Walk Kansas for Kids, Weekly Workout newsletters. Revised Series 1 to reflect MyPlate and the new dietary guidelines recommendations. Also available are Elementary levels- Series 1, 2, and the 7th/8th grade Series 1 in black/ white or color.
