Your Role as an Adviser

Advising students effectively is one of the most important responsibilities we have.

  • Students sometimes are unsure about their ability to succeed in college.
  • They are making important career decisions.
  • They want advice about planning their academic programs.
  • They want realistic information about career opportunities.
  • They look to you as their adviser to hear their questions and concerns, and to provide information and advice.

The College of Human Ecology is respected campus-wide for the effectiveness of its advising program. Students who receive the appropriate amount of time and effort from their advisers become our most effective recruiters.

Teaching and advising are the most important contributions of our faculty in the minds of students and parents.

Our university recognizes the importance of advising and is making a special commitment to improve advising.

Our College can contribute by assuring students that we care about them as persons and about their future careers and goals.

Our advising efforts impact

  • the lives of students.
  • the effectiveness of the College.
  • the future of the University.

Let's work together to make our best efforts even better

  • by being available.
  • by giving thoughtful, concerned advice.
  • by providing accurate information.

See the K-State Undergraduate Catalog section on "Academic Advising" for a summary of advising responsibilities, and "Advising" listed under Academics on the K-State web site.

How Are Advisers and Advisees Assigned?

Assignment of Advisers

  1. All faculty with academic rank may be called upon to advise students. Advisers are assigned by the Dean=s Office following the guidelines set by unit administrators (Department Head or School Director).
  2. Advisers may be assigned to advise in a curriculum or option within their own area or in other areas, depending on the number of students enrolled in the various majors.

Assignment of Advisees

  1. Generally, all students will be assigned to advisers in the academic units which offer their chosen major.
  2. Advisees will continue with their assigned advisers until they graduate or leave K-State, change majors, or an adviser change is requested by the student, adviser, or unit administrator. The student, adviser or unit administrator may contact the Dean's Office to request a change of adviser. Adviser changes requested by students require the new adviser's written approval.
