Drop/Add Courses
Refer to the section on Dropping and Adding Courses in the K-State Undergraduate Catalog for information about instructor drops for non-attendance, permission to add, and W notations for dropping courses. Also see instructions in the Course Schedule. The University Calendar includes information about deadlines for fee refunds.
After a student has enrolled, he or she may make schedule changes (drop/add) without adviser's permission through the end of the first week of classes. Students may make schedule changes using KATS or using unsigned reassignment forms at Enrollment Services.
Beginning the sixth day of classes each semester (fourth day of classes in summer term),
- KATS enrollment is closed for the semester/term. All enrollment transactions (including drop/add) must be completed at Enrollment Services.
- Instructor's permission (in print or electronic form) is required to add any course.
- Adviser's permission is required to drop or add courses for students in the Colleges of Agriculture, Architecture, Planning and Design, Education, Engineering and Human Ecology. Complete a reassignment form for the student to take to Enrollment Services.
Effective Fall Semester 1985, reassignment (drop/add) forms require only student and adviser signatures.
Ask the following questions before signing a drop/add form
- With this change, how many hours will you be enrolled in this semester?
- More than 18 for the semester (or more than 9 in Summer Sessions):
- Is the overload reasonable and justified? Are there alternatives to the overload?
- Fewer than 12 for the semester — If total is less than 12 hours for a semester, determine if the light course load will affect either of the following:
- Financial aid eligibility (encourage student to contact Office of Student Financial Assistance with questions)
- Warning/reinstatement status (refer to criteria set by academic standards committee)
- NONE — If student is dropping all classes, do not complete a reassignment (drop/add) form. Send the student to meet with Karen Pence or Mary Anne Andrews to withdraw from the University.
- More than 18 for the semester (or more than 9 in Summer Sessions):
- If requesting to add a course after first week of classes, do you have a Course Section permit (either printed form or electronic) from the instructor granting permission to add?
- If requesting to drop a course, how does this affect the scheduling of subsequent courses and anticipated graduation date?
