Course Substitution Request
A Course Substitution Request is required to obtain approval to apply a course as a substitute for a required course. Substitutions require approval by adviser, department head/director and dean. Contact your department head/school director or the Dean's Office with questions.
Substitution should be approved prior to the student taking course except in such situations as a change of curriculum or reevaluation of a transfer course.
Be certain students understand that proposed substitutions are not guaranteed until all approval signatures are obtained.
- Review the rationale for a substitution with the student and discuss options.
- If you believe a substitution is justified, complete the Course Substitution Request form. Be specific in the written rationale.
- Obtain department head/school director approval and signature.
- Send the form to the Dean's Office for review.
- Upon approval, signed copies will be returned to the student and adviser. If not approved, the adviser will be contacted with an explanation. If the student's records are maintained in DARS, the substitution will be entered into DARS as an exception.
DARS Exceptions
In some academic programs an individual elective course may be applicable in more than one category. If DARS has applied a course in a category different from the application planned by adviser and student, contact the Dean's Office so the adjustment can be made in DARS.
