A/Pass/F Grading

Eligible undergraduate students may enroll in certain courses under the A/Pass/F grading option. A/Pass/F is a grading option in which a student earning a grade of A in a course will have an A recorded for that course; a grade of B, C, or D will be recorded as a Pass, and a grade of F will be recorded as an F. Use of this grading option is highly restricted.

Prior to requesting the A/Pass/F grading option, eligibility should be verified. Three criteria must be met.

Is the course required to be a graded course in the student's major, minor or secondary major?
A student may enroll under the A/Pass/F option ONLY for courses to be applied as unrestricted electives. Courses specified by name or number in the student's degree program, courses which meet general distribution requirements (e.g., a life science elective), courses required to meet University General Education requirements, and courses to be applied in a secondary major or minor may not be taken under the A/Pass/F grading option.
Is the course offered with the A/Pass/F grading option?
Not all courses are offered with the A/Pass/F grading option. Check the GR OP column in the current Course Schedule. If the GR OP column is BLANK, the course can be taken ONLY for a letter grade. A "P" in this column indicates that the course is offered with the A/Pass/F grading option and may be taken either for a letter grade or for A/Pass/F (if requested). A C in this column indicates a non-graded course (offered for credit/no credit only).
Is the student eligible?
A/Pass/F grading option is NOT AVAILABLE to first semester freshmen, students on academic warning, and students who already have completed "Pass" credits totaling 1/6 of the credits required for their degrees.

Students can request the A/Pass/F grading option when they enroll, or by submitting an A/Pass/F request form to Enrollment Services. After the first week of classes, the request form must be signed by the students adviser and assistant dean. A/Pass/F may be requested through the fourth week of a 16-week semester, or through the second week of a six-, seven, or eight-week summer session. No changes can be made after the sign-up period ends each term.

The Registrar provides the Deans Office with a list of students who have requested A/Pass/F grading option. If the above criteria is not met, the request for A/Pass/F will be denied.
