Professional Biography

Dr. Orthel received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Oregon, a Master of Historic Preservation degree from the University of Kentucky, and a Ph.D. from Washington State University emphasizing interdisciplinary design and history.

In professional practice, he designed for small-scale commercial clients and worked on preservation programs assisting traditional communities.  His teaching and scholarship attempt to merge pragmatic, everyday issues with creative problem solving.  Dr. Orthel's scholarship examines how people understand and use history in their lives and living environments.  He also researches design thinking and teaching and learning in design.
