Advising

The Department of Apparel, Textiles, and Interior Design is dedicated to providing effective and quality advising to students as a necessary component of their educational experience. Academic advising is most influential when the advisee plays an active role. The relationship between advisor and advisee is a shared responsibility. Though the student is responsible for the choices they make in the Department of Apparel, Textiles, and Interior Design (ATID) at Kansas State University, ATID realizes that in order to make informed decisions, students will need the mentoring and advice of an academic advisor and others within the department/college. Ultimately, every student is accountable for determining and molding his or her own education. The advisor is there primarily to assist the advisee in planning and successfully pursuing academic goals and objectives. The academic advisor is your main resource regarding any academic issues, supportive tools, opportunities, student services and/or programs. 

Advisor Responsibilities

  • Clarify K-State's and ATID's policies, regulations, programs and procedures about which you may have questions
  • Understand and effectively communicate enrollment, college expectations, curriculum, graduation requirements, and department/college policies and procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records
  • Be adequately accessible through scheduled appointments, telephone calls and email messages
  • Offer advice on selecting courses, scheduling and to assist students in developing an academic plan that satisfies degree program requirements
  • Use effective communication and to be a reflective listener
  • Discuss with you your academic performance and the implications of your performance in the degree program you wish to pursue
  • Help you to explore your interests, abilities, realistic goals and objectives that relate to your degree program
  • Offer you the opportunity to participate in a mentoring relationship which will help you to become more independent, responsible and self-directed
  • Build a rapport and help guide the advisee's academic and intellectual journey
  • Know the variety of academic/student support services and resources available for students and refer when needed
  • Understand the mandates of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 as Amended (FERPA)

Student Responsibilities

  • Take the initiative to contact your advisor. Be mindful of the need to work with your advisor
  • Be prepared! Prepare a list of questions or concerns before each meeting with your advisor
  • Check email frequently for updates and important information
  • Gather all relevant decision-making information
  • Seek sources of information which will assist you in making academic/career decisions
  • Ask questions! If you do not understand a policy or a procedure, ask questions until you do understand. Be knowledgeable about policies, procedures and requirements
  • Be familiar with the requirements for the degree program(s) you are pursuing, and schedule courses each semester in accordance with those requirements
  • Be aware of the prerequisites for each course that you include in your semester schedule and to discuss with your advisor how prerequisites will affect the sequencing of your courses
  • Observe academic deadlines. Do not miss deadlines! Know when to drop or add classes. Set up appointments with your advisor well in advance of these deadlines
  • Keep your advisor informed about changes in your academic progress, course selection and academic/career goals
  • Maintain a personal record of your progress toward your degree. Organize official university documents (ATID option sheet, sequence sheet and four-year plan guide) in a way that enables you to access them when needed
  • Maintain an updated graduation/academic plan for degree completion and attend the group advising sessions offered each fall and spring semesters
  • Understand academic performance standards, academic probation, academic dismissal, and know GPA requirements
  • Assume ultimate responsibility for your education and academic program
  • Establish an active, academic relationship with your advisor
